July 7th Meeting: Speaker - Mary Cooper & Topic - Making Sense of the Census
At the May meeting, LaVerne Soefje, Milam County Clerk, spoke about the use of Milam County Records for Genealogical Research with an emphases on land records. She brought several handouts to illustrate her topic. Since the courthouse buried in 1874, ownership prior to that time can be traced only if the deeds were re-recorded. Since 1874 over 9.000 probate records are on file. Also at the courthouse are records of divorces from 1899-1909 and school census records from 1909-1969. Adoptions can be traced through real estate records prior to 1930 for Milam County.
