Sand Grove Community


The Sand Grove Church was organized by John Lincoln, a Pioneer Preacher who lived at that time near Lexington, Texas. It was a liberal church and all who wished to come and participate in the Church Worship and Sunday School were welcome.

Old Settlers moved away and there was an attempt by the Baptist, and the Full Gospel people, although they did not endure but a few years.

After Alvin D. McNeil moved into the community he organized a Church of Christ which has endured ever since.

Sand Grove School was always a two teacher school, usually 75 to 100 pupils. It has been said that Sand Grove turned out more school teachers and other business and professional people than any schools of its size in the county.

During Horace Graham's tenure at the Sand Grove School many children came to study and prepare for life. Some of those who came from other places were: Frank Johnson, Lorenz Fuchs and Rose Weatherbee from Bryant Station; Brien Dooley from Chriesman; Nonnie, Beatrice and Elizabeth Thomas from Hix School near Caldwell; Gertrude White also of Hix; Raymond Beard, Amanda and Jim Hurt from Smyrna.

Some of the teachers from Sand Grove were Rufus Hensley, Gertrude Hensley, Lula Hensley, Lola Hensley, Birdie Hensley, Jessie Hensley, Lee Hensley, Winnie Hensley, Archie Graham, Rosa Weatherbee, Nonnie Thomas, Beatrice Thomas, Elizabeth Thomas, Gertrude White, Leia Buffington, Alice Buffington, Delbert Huddlestone, Elsie Dickey, Maud Sloan.

Homer Shanks became president of the bank at Clyde, Texas. David Shanks was County Judge at Childress, Texas, Rex Shanks is a Newspaper Editor at Laredo, Texas, Owen Graham our District Judge of Milam County, Lee Hensley became County Superintendent of Burleson County, later Deputy State Superintendent, Hinton Pruitt became School Superintendent of Milam County after teaching school many years, Johnnie Cherry became Superintendent of Schools at Bay City, Texas, Newton Graham was a lawyer.

Teachers in Sand Grove School: Hinton Barber, Susie Purvis, Ed Kelley, Mollie Newton, Annie Graham, Gertrude Hensley, Horace Graham (he taught several years) his assistant teachers were Delbert Huddleston, Gertrude Hensley, Ed Gunn, Izzie Phillips, Miss Scarbrough, Lorna Ruby, Bernice Wise, Dulcie Childs (several terms) Nancy Vaughan, Bernice Wise Feed, Lloyd Woods, Lucille Hillyer, Miss Dunham, Jessie Bankston, Lottie Carver.

John Seager Sr. and wife Piney: John, Mollie, Jim. John Seager Sr. owned and operated a cotton gin on his farm in the Sand Grove

Community; this was in the late 1890's. It was a two stand gin, steam powered. Later the gin was sold and moved away.

Wm. E. Hensley, father of Mrs. Jessie Bankston, also owned and operated a cotton gin in the Sand Grove Community. He bought this gin in 1892 (former owner not known). He operated about four years and sold to Joe Poole. He operated two years and the gin burned. This was located near the Curtis Jackson farm.
