BIRD, Wilbur of Austin. In 1943 he was reported missing since Sept. 19th. He was with the 36th Division on the Italian front and was a classmate of James (Buddy) Locklin when here (Thorndale) in school. He joined the National Guard at Caldwell where the family later moved and went to the army from there. He had been overseas since about the first of April. His wife and baby live in Austin. She was BORN on 10/22/1882 in Rusk, TX. Widowed at age of 27, she moved to Houston with her 3 children in 1918. Moved to Thorndale in 1965 to be near M/M Porter Shine. When her health began to fail at age 92, she went into a rest home in Hempstead. Member of First Baptist Church, Thorndale. Preceded in death by 3 children and 1 grandson. He was a cattleman/rancher in Midland and San Antonio until he retired. Married Fay Arnim 6/17/1912 in Flatonia. Wife preceded him in death in 1963. Past 12 years he resided with his daughter & son-in-law, M/M Henry G. Wicks in Rockdale, Pt.Lavaca, Pittsburgh, PA. and then returned to Rockdale for the final year of his life.
