SIMMONS, Mrs. Annie (Jim) of Elgin. Age 80. Died 2/1974 (Thursday) in a rest home in Elgin. Services held (Friday) at Newby Funeral Home in Elgin. Burial was in the Lawhon Springs Cemetery. Rev. Ray Head officiated. She was BORN 12/7/1893 and had been a resident of Elgin for 10 years. Member of the Baptist Church. SURVIVORS: Brother, W.E. Holman; 4 sisters and several nieces and nephews. SIMMONS, Arbie B. of Leander. Age 76. Died 9/1973 (Tuesday) in a Georgetown hospital. Services held (Wed.) at Davis Funeral Home at 2900 Williams Dr. Burial was in Bagdad Cemetery. Rev. SIMMONS, Archie C. of Rockdale. Age 80. Died 3/1977 (Sunday) in the VA Hospital in Temple after a long illness. Services held (Wed.) in Phillips & Luckey Chapel, Rockdale. Burial in Adiana Cemetery near Lexington. Rev. D.D. Simpson officiated. He was BORN 12/25/1896 in Taylor to M/M. Jim & Irene Carline Simmons. Lifelong resident of Rockdale. Employed as a musician for over 70 yrs. Married Evie Lee Moon in 1920 in Thorndale. He was a fiddler for over 70 yrs, traveling all over the U.S. for old-time fiddling contests. Member of the Lexington Senior Citizens Club, the American Legion and the Old Times Fiddlers Asso. of Ft.Worth. SIMMONS, Dewey of Round Top, TX. Age 75. Died 6/1974 (Sat.) in a Pasadena hospital. Services held (Monday) in Phillips & Luckey Chapel at Giddings. Burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. He was BORN 3/17/1899 in the Pleasant Hill Community, son of the late M/M. Enoch Simmons. Married to Miss Fannie Haggard in 8/1927 and they farmed in the Tanglewood area for a number of years before moving to Seabrook where they were employed with the Champion Paper Products Co. until Mr. Simmons’ retirement. They moved to Round Top, near Burton, where they owned a farm. Member of the Methodist Church at Industry. Simmons who preceded her in death, also her parents and a brother, Jim Stovall. Member of Lawrence Chapel Methodist Church, and made her home in that community for many years. SIMMONS, Ira H of 4206 Dove Lane, Temple. Age 53. Died 8/1974 (Thursday) (in paper 8/15/74) in the Fort Hood Hospital, following a heart attack. Simmons was retired after 23 years service in the U.S. Navy and was an NCO life insurance agent. Member of the First Lutheran Church in Temple, VFW, Fleet Reserve Asso. & Texas Farm Bureau. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Varden and Edward. SIMMONS, J. Kelly of Fresno, CA. Age 58. Died 6/1962. He had been in ill health for about a year. Two funerals were held. A chapel service was scheduled in Fresno, headquarters for the California Southern Baptist and services at North Waco Church, Waco, TX. Burial in Waco. He was BORN 3/19/1905, a native of Westminster, Collin County, TX. and editor of the California Southern Baptist, publication of Southern Baptist General Convention of California. He was a former pastor of First Baptist Church in Thorndale and the San Gabriel Baptist Church. A journalism graduate of Baylor Univ., Waco, and graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft.Worth. Left the Kingsville Church to become an Army Chaplain in 1943 and was awarded the bronze star for valor in action in WW-2. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. SIMMONS, Jim of Arizona & Rockdale. Age 63. Died 4/19/1990 (Thursday) in Richards Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. Services held 4/23 (Monday). Burial in Adina Cemetery near Lexington. Pastor Arnold Henson of Paige Baptist Mission officiated. BORN 1/13/1927 in Milam Co. to M/M. Archie C. & Evie Lee Moon Simmons. He was a professional musician and played the base fiddle. Married 5/30/1927 to Cynthia Ann Roberts in Covina, CA. Served briefly in the U.S. Navy during WW-2. Member of musicians unions in Arizona and California and performed on various radio and television programs with Bob Wells, Tex Williams, Tex Ritter, Lee Hazelwood, Dwayne Eddy and others. Preceded in death by his father in 1977. SIMMONS, Mrs. Lucille (T. R.) of Austin. Age 53. Died 4/1965 (Sat.) in an Austin hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. (Sunday) at the Rogers Church of Christ. Burial was in Reed's Lake Cemetery. Minister Melvin Allen and Minister Schilling officiated. Gommert Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Simmons was BORN 12/21/1911 in Holland. She was married to T.R. Simmons of Temple, 6/17/1939. They lived in Temple for 12 years before moving to Fredericksburg and Austin. Member of Church of Christ. Sloan of Rogers; 3 brothers, Bill Sloan of Austin, Robert Sloan of Temple and Clyde Sloan of Amarillo; 3 sisters, Mrs. Nola Murdock of Fresno, CA., Noma Cobb of Rogers, and Mrs. Ruth Sowders of Pasadena; a niece, Mrs. James Farrell of Temple.

SIMMONS, Mrs. Marguerite of Lexington. Age 64. Died 3/1977 (Wed.) (in paper 3/24/1977) in Richards Memorial Hospital after an illness of several weeks. Services held (Friday) in Lexington Methodist Church. Burial in Lexington City Cemetery. Rev. Bill Service officiated. She was BORN 6/23/1912 in Lexington to M/M. Harvey Clyde Rutland. A lifelong resident of Lexington. She was employed in the banking and insurance business. Member of above church, the Eastern Star and a director of Lexington State Bank. Also, owned her own insurance business and active in Lexington Chamber of Commerce. Preceded in death by husband, Thomas W. Simmons, in 1963. She was BORN 4/26/1892 in Thorndale where she lived until entering a nursing home in Taylor 15 years ago. Member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Thorndale. SIMMONS, Ollie of Thorndale. Age 77. Died 10/1963 (Sunday) morning unexpectedly while enroute to a Taylor hospital. Services held (Monday) at 2 p.m. at the Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery. Rev. Dan C. Thompson, pastor of the Trinity Methodist Church, officiated. He was BORN 11/16/1885 in Shiloh, the son of the late Tom & Mandy Barber Simmons, pioneer residents of the Shiloh Community. Married on 12/11/1910 to Miss Nona Wilder. He was a farmer and rancher. Member of above church. He practiced the golden rule daily. Services held (Thursday) at St.John's United Methodist Church. Burial in IOOF Cemetery. Rev. Matt Chambers officiated. She was BORN 1/18/1931 at Temple. Married Gordon (BO) Simmons in Temple on 8/30/1952. They moved to Rockdale in 10/1952. Memorial to Amer. Cancer Soc. SIMMONS, Thomas Arthur of Rt.1, Thrall. Age 70-71. Died ?/1959 (Wed.) unexpectedly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Allie Lawrence in Taylor. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. (Friday) at Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor with the Rev. Homer Pumphrey officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Retreat Cemetery. Mr. Simmons was BORN 6/3/1888 in Williamson County and had made his home in Williamson County all of his life. He was a farmer and a member of the Christian Church. SURVIVORS: Wife, Mrs. Arthur Simmons; 2 daughters, Mrs. Allie Lawrence of Taylor and Mrs. G.C. Lawrence Jr. of Thrall; 2 sons, Ross Simmons and T.A. Simmons, Jr. both of Taylor; brother, Ollie Simmons of Thorndale and 7 grandchildren.

SIMMONS, W. C. of 1001 13th St. North, Texas City. Age 42. Died 7/13/1974 at Veterans Hospital, Houston. Services were held 7/16 at 10 a.m. at the James Drowder Funeral Home in La Marque. Burial was Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery at Hitchcock. Rev. Ronald L. Calhoun officiating. He was BORN 7/15/1931 in Rockdale and had lived in Texas City for 18 years. He was a Texas City police lieutenant who received a severed spinal cord in a 10/28/1967 shooting as he struggled with the son-in-law of a fellow policeman, A.E. (Smokey) Stover, at a Texas City residence. The gunman and Stover's wife were both killed by gunfire and Stover was shot numerous times, he was 36 years old and off-duty at the time of the shooting. Mr. Simmons joined the Texas City department in the late 1950's, where he helped establish an identification department. Joined the Galveston Co. Sheriff's Department in 1963 and later that same year joined the Galveston Police Dept., identification bureau. In 1964 he returned to the Texas City Dept. where he remained until the shooting incident 3 years later. SURVIVORS: Wife, Josephine of Texas City; a son, Tommy Simmons of Texas City; a sister, Mrs. Joyce Norris of Texas City; 3 brothers, Gene Simmons of Dayton, John Touchstone and Bill Touchstone, both of Texas City; and 3 aunts, Mrs. Grady Williams and Mrs. Ralph Hubert, both of Rockdale, and Mrs. Buster Guthrie of San Gabriel. SIMMONS, Willie Ely of Gause. Age 82. Died 6/1977 (Thursday) (in paper 6/16/1977) in Bryan's Sherwood Health Care Facility. Services held (Sat.) in Phillips & Luckey Chapel, Rockdale. Member of Temple Beth El in Austin, veteran of WW-2 and operated Simon Cash Grocery in Thorndale until retiring in 1980. Memorials to American Heart Asso. SIMON, Mrs. Esther (Abe) of Georgetown. Age 74. Died 5/1987 (Monday) after being taken from her home to the Georgetown Hospital. Services held (Wed.) in Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor at 11:00. Graveside services in Hemptead at 3:00. She was BORN in New York on 3/4/1913. Married Abraham Simon on 5/16/1942. Couple operated Simons' Grocery in Thorndale from 1952 until 1980 when they retired and moved to Georgetown. Abe Simon died in 1983. Member of VFW Hill-Johnson Post No. 4009 Auxiliary. SIMONTON, James "Jimmy" of Rockdale. Age 87. Died 5/1975 (Thursday) in Richards Memorial Hospital after an illness of 10 weeks. Services held (Friday) in Phillips & Luckey Chapel, Rockdale. Burial in the IOOF Cemetery. He was BORN 2/12/1888 in Milam County to M/M. W.R. Simonton and lived in and around Rockdale all his life. He was a house painter after 1947 and before that date was in the mattress factory business. He married Miss Era Mae Gray on 5/3/1935. He had been previously married to Miss Mary Mason, who preceded him in death in 1932. Member of Church of Christ for 28 years and was very active in the Rockdale Athletic Asso., following the Rockdale Tiger football team throughout his life and was often selected "coach of the week". SKELTON, Donald Miller of La Porte. Age 85. Died 6/10/1989 in a Pasadena Texas Hospital. Services held 6/13 in Paul U. Lee Funeral Home. Burial in Grand View Memorial Cemetery, all in LaPorte. Rev. Al Pennington officiated. He was BORN 11/15/1903 in Bogota, TX. and moved to La Porte in 1943 from Yantis to work in Houston shipyards. Worked as a carpenter in a number of Gulf Coast industrial plants. Member of First Baptist Church, La Porte, for nearly 35 years. Member of Carpenters Local Union 213, Houston. Although on crutches, he operated Skelton's Work Shop in his home. Also worked as a custodian for the La Porte School District prior to his retirement. Preceded in death by wife, Thelma Blanche Skelton and son, Jack Miller Skelton. SURVIVORS: 3 sons, B. *SKINNER, Archie Carl of Rockdale. Age 53. Died 3/01/1942 (Tuesday) at his home following a stroke suffered on 1/08. He was in poor health with a kidney ailment for over 10 years prior to death. Services held 3/03 (Thursday) at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home, Rockdale. Burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Rockdale. Revs. T. Miller Smith of the Methodist Church and Linwood Peterson of the Baptist Church officiated. He was BORN 9/2/1895, the son of M/M. A.H. Skinner, at Black Jack in Burleson Co. Married Miss Ludie Hillin on 10/9/1924, and 5 children were born to this union. Small son, Archie Carl, Jr. died some years ago. Mr. Skinner was a member of the Baptist Church. SKRIVANEK, Dr. John M. of College Station. Age 59. Died 12/27/1972 (Wed.) unexpectedly at his residence. Services held 12/29 (Friday) in Memorial Funeral Chapel. Had been a resident of Brazos Co. since 1952. Graduated with a bachelor of science degree and masters degree from the Univ. of Texas. Received PhD at Charles Univ. in Prague, Czechoslovakia. First taught at the Univ. of Houston, then moved to Texas A&M Univ. and was a professor of modern languages. He was organizer and secretary-treasurer of Texas Czech Education Foundation. Author of several Czech. text books which were used throughout the country. He also authored a textbook on Russian language. Member of Caldwell Brethren Church and a 32nd degree Mason in the Sul Ross Masonic Lodge of College Station.
