The UDC presents Pioneer in Space Awards to individuals who are lineal descendants of Confederate Soldiers or Sailors. Posthumous awards are permitted. Description: The bronze medal is in the shape of a spaceship and in relief depicts the Earth in the foreground with the moon (or sun) with several stars. The Flag of the United States of America and the First National Flag of the Confederacy appear prominently in the center of the medal. The words “Pioneers in Space” are located at the top of the medal which is suspended from a sky blue ribbon by the intertwined initials, UDC. The words “United Daughters of the Confederacy” are at the very bottom of the medal at the base of the spaceship design. |

In 1974, the Convention approved the creation of the Pioneers in Space Committee. It dissolved in 1978, re-established in 1981, as a Special Committee. In 1985, it became a Standing Committee. In June 1984, copyrights to the Pioneer in Space Medal were applied for and Registration in the name of the United Daughters of the Confederacy entered by the Copyright Office Library of Congress, Washington, DC on 15 Oct 1984. Fifty numbered Medals were purchased from Medallic Art Company of Danbury, CT. Certificates to accompany the Medal, the Certificate of Award for Technical Achievement were designed and printed. The application forms were also approved and prented. |

VA 23220-4057.
On 26 July 1994 our insignia (logo) was also approved by the Patent Trademark Office of the United States. Therefore they are not to be used without permission and when displayed must have the copyright symbol. As stated in the 1997 UDC Bylaws on page 41, Article 34 Insignia Section 2, a & b.
